So what’s in a name: Getting a good descriptive domain name!
Registering or owning a business name does not entitle you to own the same URL.
    A recent example in TheAge.com.au

After a Tennessee police department let its website expire, the site was snatched up by Brian McCrary who uses it to gripe about speed cameras. The site shows a smiling cartoon police badge clutching greenbacks. It also posts gripes from those who’ve been caught speeding.

So remember to keep your Domain registration up to date!

In the great 90′s Domain grab, a whole load of Domains were grabbed by web prospectors or Cyber Squatters as we once called them. This has made it much more of a challenge to find ‘Good’ available domain names, but it’s important to know that you spend less to market and brand descriptive URLs.  Remember that you need to appeal to both Humans and Web Robots, so a good web address needs to be memorable, easy to spell, simple to say, hear and read, but most importantly your URL should be descriptive and relevant to your product or service.

Just like any post gold rush, there is always a gem laying around if you know where to look.

“I’m often amazed at some of the domain names that still haven’t been taken and equally frustrated by domains that have, but just sit there with a coming soon notice”.

The key is to do a bit of creative thinking and make a mind map of descriptive terms, and then just test the availability on a domain shopping site. If your a location based business, then narrowing down your search by using the location name i.e. (AvalancheBoronia) will inversely widen up your opportunities.

“Brand creation is a big part of what we do at Avalanche Creative Solutions, we go through a long and painstaking process of name creation and then cross referencing with available domain names as well as Business and Trade mark searches. Sometimes we strike gold and sometimes we have to go back to the creative thinking stage”

Sites like www.godaddy.com offer ‘Domain Auctions’ but this can be initially expensive. Look at premium domains – you will pay more initially but thereafter the cost to renew is exactly the same.

Rosella Packaging for the Linen press

Our good friends at the Linen Press have given us another packaging job to do after the success of our last range (The Kangaroo and the Koala range). This time it was time to package and brand the Australian Rosella.

The Australian Rosella is a species of colourful Australian parrots that live in forests, parks and gardens. They eat seeds and fruit and quite a hit with the locals and visitors alike!

As this is another souvenir range, we decided to package the range as a luscious gift parcel – stamps, strings, ribbons and postmarks are used to give the range a ‘lovingly packaged’ flavour, wrapped by a distant relative and sent all the way to your doorstep.

We scanned in some old postcards and lifted little lines and markings from worn paper to give the range a natural feel but kept it light and colourful to keep it fresh. Upon opening the package you will discover a lovely gingham print with some more information on the rosella. We’ve embossed the rosella to give it depth and used lashings of Spot UV Varnish to really bring out the highlights in this packaging.

This range contains wild rosella fruit extract and it smells delicious!! We hope you like!

Vicbar09 600x370 Victorian Bar Annual Report 08/09We’ve just completed the 08/09 Annual Report for the Victorian Bar.

This year features a very classic and sophisticated design with a spot silver ink on the cover and throughout the publication. The fine typography and delicate linework The silver really lifts the images throughout and gives it that very special touch! Andy also put his pen and paintbrush to work and created a series of illustrations to use throughout the annual report. If you look closely, you’ll see that they’re based on real staff members of the Victorian Bar. Can you guess which ones? ;P

hybridbus header Australia’s first Hybrid Electric buses launched.

Avalanche Creative, together with the Department of Sustainability, Grenda and Ventura Buslines, have been working really hard to bring you the new hybrid electric buses! There are two of them, one for Ventura and one for Grenda, both using different Hybrid-Electric technology. These are the first of their kind in Australia and are part of the Government’s plan to increase the use of low emission vehicles.

A big party was thrown at Essendon Airport earlier this year to mark the launch and was met with much support and press coverage (yay!)

    From the press release:
“It is estimated this hybrid-electric technology will provide a saving of around 20 per cent on fuel and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional diesel bus.”

Grenda Corporation will trial a hybrid bus along its 900 route from Stud Park to Caulfield while Ventura Buses will conduct a trial along its 250 route from Garden City to La Trobe University.

    **update**
Ernie saw the bus for the first time when she was scootering down Princes Hwy last weekend! Looks good!

    Australian Rain Forest Brand identity

Avalanche Creative recently partnered with the Australian Rainforest Foundation to develop a viral marketing campaign and design a website for the ‘Win the Best Holiday’ campaign.

The Australian Rainforest Foundation (ARF) are a not for profit foundation aimed at protecting Australian Rainforests, including the world’s oldest and heritage listed rainforest – the Daintree Rainforest – which is home to countless species of flora and fauna, some which are only found in the Daintree. The ARF are also campaigning to save the very weird looking ‘cassowary’, a bright and colourful looking cousin of the emu. It’s survival is instrumental to the conservation of the Daintree as it acts as a seed disperser by eating Daintree fruits and leaving seed-rich droppings on its travels.

    Australian Rainforest foundation website design

For just a $10 contribution, you could help protect 10 square metres of our precious rainforest. Yes, it’s tax deductible and as a bonus, many Queensland companies have sponsored the campaign by offering the trip of a lifetime. So for every $10 you contribute, you get one entry to win the grand prize (it’s worth up to $15k!!)

So please support the Australian Rainforest Foundation by donating today!

stadiumsigns web Recently completed website for Stadium Signs.

Stadium Signs, are East Melbourne’s  signage solutions company. They specialise in all forms of signage related to exhibitions, events and conferences – large format, creative printing, vinyl graphics, vehicle wraps, stadium signage, canvas prints.. just about anything you can think of!

We didn’t really want your stock standard images of pretty flowers and colourful butterflies that most printers use on their website.
We wanted more impact, more connection to the viewer! We wanted to create a website that gave a feel for the events that Stadium Signs design for – rock concerts, sporting events, etc..

You know the feeling– that excitement when that goal is scored; that anticipation, waiting for your idol to come onstage; that buzzing energy in the venue!
